- 414 Mki, 488 Mki
Recently a friend let me take home a Tascam 424 Mki she had lying around on an indefinite loan. Tracking with it yesterday I got a little pushy with the transport while repeatedly trying to get a take punching into one section. During one of the rewinds the tape suddenly stopped. I believe I played and rewinded it a little and saw that that there was some sort of malfunction with the tape speed before shutting it off. I have a 488 Mki with a finicky transport so I figured restarting the machine could remedy this issue as it had worked there.
When I booted it back up the transport was completely unresponsive and the tape seemed jammed. Eventually when I got the tape out I saw that the capstan shaft was continuing to run as if it were stuck in rewind, though at an extremely steady pace. I restarted the machine and fiddled with buttons with no response for a few minutes before giving up and continuing the session on my 414.
I’m assuming this is something I’m going to need to bring into a repair shop but I’m curious if anyone has run into a similar issue.
