Hi everyone,

I've noticed a lot of spikes after updating from Mountain Lion to Yosemite in Cubase 7.5 on a early 2008
2 x 2,8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 16GB RAM and a DM3200

I've installed newer drivers for example: IFFWDMmkII_Installer_188754_Release.dmg and repaired disk permissions, but no improvement; still the same spikes on songs which ran well on Mountain Lion.

Am I doing something wrong?
Can someone please help me out?!
Any help is much appreciated!

Cheers,
Chris.

Up.....

I went to my old OS (Mountain Lion) which is still available as a startup-disk on my computer.
There it all works well, no spikes!
My IF-FW/DM MKll says I have firmware 1.10 (88685)
My TMC says I have 1.72b3 as the current version
Confusing...... are these 2 compatible?
How to check what driver version I installed?
I have still a lot of spikes...... and currently mixing for our new album to come out soon
Is there a solution? or do I have to stay in Mountain Lion to work well with my DM and Cubase?

You're confusing the two. Firmware and drivers are different. Firmware are instructions at the hardware level, drivers are at the software level.

Firmware 1.72b3 refers to the DM3200 mixer.
Firmware 1.10 refers to the IF-FW option card.

Your spike problem has nothing to do with firmware.

The problem lies somewhere with the OS and firwire driver you are using.

I'm not a MAC person so I can't make any recommendations about what firewire drivers to use with any of the MAC OS's. There are a few MAC users who can assist if reading.

Tnx
So how can I check which driver is installed now on my Hd? or which one is the if-fw/dmmkll using now?

It looks like I don't use the latest beta driver now
Or, if I'm using it, why doesn't it work?

Firewire driver version is displayed when you launch the ASIO control panel app.
Latest MAC Beta driver is F10. Again, I can't vouch for any MAC OS and Firewire driver version combinations. I am a PC user. Sorry. Best to try the last 2 or 3 versions of the firewire drivers and see what works best for you. I don't recall if anyone here confirmed that the latest MAC firewire drivers work or don't work with the latest MAC OS.

Ah, tnx!
Of course.
Now I can dive into that and clear things out.
Tnx again

Euh.... where's the ASIO control panel on a MAC?

When I open Cubase I can see in devices/IF-FW/DM MKll/control panel in my core audio device that the IF-FW/DM MKll is version 2.2.7.16 that's all I can find about it.....

Does that number refers to a newer beta driver? or is it an older one?

Open the TASCAM ASIO Control Panel

It would be here.. circled in red

Ok, tnx for your patience and help!
I just downloaded, uninstalled and installed the latest driver like I did before and checked again Cubase: still spikes.
On the MAC the control panel looks like this now on my computer, so that seems to be cleared: I have the latest driver installed and working.
So something else must cause for the spikes?

What do you mean when you say"spikes?" Pops and clicks? Lagging or lost time? Processor meter spiking into the red? If it's the latter, can you hear the spike or just see it?

I hear stuttering, thought these are called "spikes" and in the VST performance meter I can see that the average load is before 50%, but the real time peak goes in red al the time when a chord on the piano is hit (Kontakt, the Giant) Disk load is 0 (since I choose 6 secs audio pre-load now)

This is for this particular song, but other projects where more or the same amounts of VSTi's are used it's the same..... (where in Mountain Lion this doesn't occur)
And yes, I can hear the spikes and see them as well.

What is new in Yosemite: on my transport-bar and on the mixer-screen right upper corner (I have the little performance-bar installed there as well) I don't see overs there; it's about 50%
Only when I open the performance peak-meter, I can see the real-time peak meter overloads.

Thanks for trying to help me out......

Difference in performance between Mountain Lion and Yosemite
(the Yosemite picture doesn't show the full overload, only 95% or so, due to screenshot techniques ;-)

Well, nothing seems to help, whatever I try, so guess I'll have to go back to Mountain Lion :-(

And you opened a ticket with Steinberg and / or posted your problem on their forum as well?

No, I didn't; good idea..... ;-/
Haven't done that since I thought it was because of the DM.....

Solved, by installing Cubase 8.5
Now everything works fine again :)
