I'd like to convert older WAV files to BWFs so that I can add and edit the metadata of each recording (currently, I use BWF MetaEdit in Debian Linux to edit metadata of BWFs from a DR44-WL). Can anyone suggest an application that can do that?

I'd recommend EZ CD Audio Converter. Does everything and more: https://www.poikosoft.com/

EDIT: Mmh, I see broadcast wave is one of the few formats it does NOT do... Sorry (not quite everything and more..)

I wanted to say Audacity in the first place but read the question again and assumed it must be more complex. Nope! Audacity.

To convert older WAV files to BWF format for easy metadata editing with BWF MetaEdit, you can use a dedicated audio editing software like Audacity which has the capability to export WAV files as BWF format with embedded metadata; simply open your WAV file in Audacity, go to "File" > "Export" and select "Broadcast Wave (.wav)" to ensure BWF compliance.

Key points about using Audacity:
  • Widely available:
Audacity is a free and open-source application available on most operating systems, including Debian Linux.

  • Simple workflow:
Import your WAV files, select the desired export settings (ensure BWF format), and add any necessary metadata before exporting.

  • Metadata editing:
While Audacity allows basic metadata embedding, for advanced metadata management, you can still use BWF MetaEdit after exporting your files as BWFs.
