Hello all, I'm new to the community and I wanted some knowledge about the 44 1/4" 4-track. I can get one for a nice price but it may be overkill for what I want. I want 15ips to bounce tracks from my DAW my interface right now is a UA Apollo Twin X so I would probably only be using two tracks of the 44? I've been down a few rabbit holes I think channels one and three are the ones I would use? I appreciate any help and advice this thing looks so cool and reminds me of the analog days of my youth.

Gotta love analog! Have fun with it...
I'm (juuuuust) smart enough to understand that technology marches on and artists/studios/record co's will use whatever technology is fastest/cheapest/most versatile. Nowadays, that means extensively computerized/automated studios with a loooot of software doing what people/hardware used to do.
But - I'm also old enough to be acutely aware of how - for decades - there simply wasn't anything BUT analog gear and the talents/ingenuity of artists and engineers/producers, many of whom produced recorded music that is not only spectacularly done and utterly timeless in appeal - but all the more awe-inspiring, because it was done on gear that by today's standards is considered primitive garbage. No cut/paste, no auto-tune, no rhythm corrections, grid-fixing, nuthin'...just amazingly talented artists actually performing every last note, lick, line, chord, etc...ON TAPE.
If you don't agree, watch Rick Beato on ytube, who's in his 60's and a very old-school guy - who managed tremendous success using said garbage. A good example is his "What Makes This Song Great" video for YES's "Roundabout", in which he remarks on the primitive gear they had, the ingenious techniques they employed, and how the "feel" of the song is a direct result of all of that.

I absolutely agree and l like some stuff from today’s artist but l still remember the shock when the Beatles broke up. Back then we listened to both sides of an album because artists didn’t release new music as much as they do now. My Brother was the audiophile he got me hooked he’s gone now but l remember and love the appreciation for music he gave me.

Using tracks 1 & 3 would be compatible with the standard stereo format for analog stereo reel to reel tape recording and playback. Record/play tracks 1 & 3, flip the take up reel over, switch the take up reel with the now empty supply reel, and record/play tracks 2 & 4.
The 44 however is a 4-Track multitrack recorder/reproducer, It can operate as a standard stereo reei to reel recorder, and is also capable of recording and playing back all 4 tracks simultaneously, but in one direction only, similar to recording using a portastudio.
