Hi
Although getting Phil Tipping’s excellent manual for the DP24SD has taught me all I need to know about it, he rightly doesn’t offer critiques about its effects.

I use a Gibson LP and a Fender Tele, but there’s no way I can get anywhere close to getting a half-decent sound with the machine’s Guitar Effect - for any type of music.

Is there a trick to getting a good sound from the Guitar Effect ?
It would be good to have an alternative to using my amp for recording.

Thanks

Start by checking out all the amp and speaker combinations until you find one that is the closest to what you are looking for. From there, adjust all the parameters by ear. There are some presets that might be useful as a starting place.

This is strictly my opinion...

The internal amp sim option(s) can be "optimized" using compression, eq, etc.... to be the best that they can be. But by today's standards - you can't get "there" with what's offered in the DP, internally.

But if you're using quality instruments (like LP's and Tele's) - chances are you are interested in *good* guitar tone. In that case I would recommend spending a little more $$ and getting something that will get you instant, great "mic'd cabinet" guitar tone.

My quality tube amps have been getting a rest since I sprung for one of these. Three vintage tube amps in one small box. The modeling is state of the art and as good as it gets, IMO. There are other options of course - but the Iridium is VERY strong. Keep in mind it is designed to plug straight into the board (DP), is great with pedals in front of it, and has many different IR combos/options. It is a tone machine.

I use my Boss Katana 100 MkII modeling amp as a direct in for most of my effects. I too, find the Tascam effects sub par sadly. And there is not a big selection. I had a Yamaha AW16G years ago which was LOADED with so many really good effects not only for guitar but vocals also. Limiters, gates, various reverbs, etc, etc. I miss those.

Any modulation effects, limiters, compressors and such come from the Katana but I have always found any distortion or gain effects from any portastudio or my amp to sound particularly....um, well...distorted! And thin. I tend to mic my amp for that to get the air that modeling can’t provide. I run my LP into the Katana for that.

My Stratocaster is paired with a Fender Tone Master Blonde Deluxe which I also DI into the Tascam. A Boss Blues Driver, Sustain, and chorus run into the front of that amp.

It is a lot of fiddling around to get it just right, but that’s half the fun.

I second these comments. If you want "good" tone, and what that is is known only by you, you need either a guitar modeling system like a BOSS GT-1000 (mention it only because that's what I use), or some stomp boxes that deliver the tones you want. Think of the Tascam as a digital recorder more than anything else. For the cost of this unit you have to expect that the effects are going to be a secondary focus to the designers. They are there for very basic effects with not a lot of parameters that you find on other effects units.
