Dead DR-44wl

I have a little over 2 year old DR_44WL that was only used a couple of times and never abused/dropped. A couple months ago I went to use it and nothing... screen lights up but the is no text/data on the screen. Tascam repair via emails says that yes that is a problem and I should send it in for repair... but it's out of warranty and I am not going to pay to repair a lemon. What do I do? Just throw it away?
