My recorder won't turn on and I'm pretty sure it's the adpater. I was having issues with it for a while, it would turn off and I'd have to mess with the cord. Now I can't get it to work at all. It's quite old! I did an online search to find a replacement but can't find an exact match. It's a PS-P2, input AC120V, 60 Hz, 13 W. Output DC 12V, 600mA. I don't know enough to know if something that's similar but not exactly the same will still work OK. If anyone could tell me what I might be able to replace it with it would be greatly appreciated. I dont want to buy one and not have it work. Damn, I came up with a cool song and wanted to get it down and couldn't get the recorder going! I realize I need to upgrade to a digital, but I have a box full of tapes I've saved over the years that I still want to be able to use.

OK...I'll be the dyk here:

The adapter you describe is absolutely garden-variety, available anywhere. Yes, you'll likely have to go with an aftermarket/off-brand one; hopefully you can find one of reasonable quality (in particular, made for audio equipment).
If you want your 414 to work - just find one and buy it.

My parting words of advice: "OBSERVE POLARITY" (just in case: that means establish whether your unit's adapter is to be "center negative" or "center positive"). The size of the pin can matter too.
